Hands-On Veterinary Experience in Thailand, A Semester Studying Abroad

August 06, 2025

For 亚洲色吧 marine biology and pre-vet student Sadie Walters 鈥27, spending a semester in Thailand was more than just a passport stamp; it was a thrilling step toward her future career. Participating in Loop Abroad鈥檚 Veterinary Science Semester, Walters worked closely with animals rarely encountered in U.S. classrooms.

For three months, Walters immersed herself in the care of exotic animals. From scrubbing sea turtles鈥 shells to giving meerkats a check-up, her semester abroad exposed her to care techniques she hopes to use as a vet. Sadie brushing sea turtle

鈥淚 chose this program because it seemed to be very helpful in preparing myself for my future and in vet school,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭his program also offered hands-on experience with animals that I would probably not have had the chance to work with in the U.S. at this point in my education.鈥

Walters鈥檚 trip was coordinated through 亚洲色吧鈥檚 Study Abroad & Away. Assistant Director Christina Williams advised her throughout the process of selecting and preparing for the program.

"This program was a fantastic option for a student like Sadie to explore a niche area of focus,鈥 said Williams. 鈥淎nimal and veterinary science courses aren't readily available on campus at 亚洲色吧, so the opportunity to take these courses abroad was beneficial for Sadie to explore her interests in this field and better inform her plans after graduation."

One of Walters鈥檚 most memorable experiences was observing elephant behavior while hiking at Burm and Emily鈥檚 Elephant Sanctuary (BEES).

鈥淭his sanctuary is home to three female elephants who are free from the unethical experiences that other so-called 鈥榮anctuaries鈥 offer,鈥 Walters shared. 鈥淓ach day, the elephants roam around more than 500 acres. My group and I went on a forest hike with them, where we experienced them in their natural habitat. Observing them from a distance was one of the best experiences I had during my time abroad.鈥Sadie at elephant sanctuary

While at BEES, Walters helped enrich the life of one elderly elephant, who had a habit of pressing her head into the corner of the fence. Walters turned a large rice bag into a pillow and secured it to the fence, providing the elephant with a soft surface to enjoy.

In addition to the care techniques she learned as part of her coursework, Walters said she also enjoyed experiencing Thai culture firsthand. The semester abroad left a lasting impression on her, and she hopes to return after graduation.

鈥淭here are so many new opportunities out there, and so many species in need,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 would love to return to Thailand with my family and friends . I would also love to see the instructors who guided me abroad!鈥

She also encouraged other 亚洲色吧 students to seize the same opportunity she did.

鈥淪tudying abroad is a great way to get more experience and see into your future. It is also an amazing way to make new connections that could help you along your path.鈥
